Intelligent alternators that charge the battery while it decelerates These features have been included in Mini range as well. • Efficient dynamics programme • Stop-start engine devices • Improved aerodynamics Results are significant improvements in both fuel economy and CO2 reduction. Each model is more powerful than previously, despite environmental improvements. Plans: to further reduce Co2 emissions and fuel consumption through engine and vehicle engineering efficiencies, including weight reduction. Incentive to do so: Company sells many large high performance vehicles which will make it difficult for the company to meet the European Union’s 2012 target average of 120g/km for new car sales. More than half of BMW’s range is already at 140g/km already. Medium-term it will be introducing hybrid drive-trains for its bigger vehicles, beginning with the next X6 four-wheel drive coupe for 2009. Hybrid drive-trains will also be introduced in the next 7 series. BMW claims it integrates environmental and recycling requirements into the design of its products and all the companies production plants are certified by ISO 14001. BMW also developed the H2ague project, a concept car powered by a stationery hydrogen fuel cell. BMW has also been rated as the most efficient major German company in its use of financial, ecological and social resources. High rating due to: use of powder and water based paints to reduce the amount of solvents used by 50% over the last 10 years. Reduced emissions of carbon dioxide by 24% through efforts such as recycling the heat generated in the manufacturing process, powering one of its factories by methane from a local landfill site, using groundwater for cooling, reducing the need for refrigeration plants and purifying and recycling the water used in its factories. This has reduced water used per vehicle produced by 47% since 1986.

Citroen are now at the forefront of environmental activism within the motor industry. 20 models that it offers in this country have emissions of 120g/km or less which beats all other manufacturers hands-down. They were the first to offer stop-start technology which switches off the engine when idle in traffic, automatically restarting when the clutch is depressed. Citroen’s automated manual transmissions also feature a clever fuel and carbon dioxide saving mode. Diesel models can run on a mix of up to 30% biofuel – more than many other manufacturers can offer. One minor downside is that while it offers diesel particulate traps on most diesel models, these are not yet standard options.

Fiat are committed by 2012 to reach the lowest weighted average carbon dioxide level (a commitment made by chief executive Sergio Marchionne) which effectively means that Fiat on average would have (measured by sales) the lowest carbon dioxide emissions in Europe. Fiat’s new 500 model is the first car in Europe which fully complies (throughout the entire engine range) with the Euro 5 emissions regulations (Euro 5 emissions regulations deal more with dirty pollutants like hydrocarbons). Fiat has previously developed a hydrogen fuel-cell powered car based on the Seicento although it believes that this technology remains in the embryo stage. As Fiat largely manufactures fuel-efficient small engine cars, it hasn’t needed to take drastic measures to reduce emissions in its vehicles thus no grand marketing campaigns hailing its own efforts in this area are necessary. As previously mentioned in the Alfa Romeo section, Fiat developed a ‘Uniair’ petrol engine which claims to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 40%, nitrogen oxide emissions by 50% and increases pulling power in the engine.

Ford has undertaken research into the area of making fuel technology more efficient in its engines. This will be first seen in the new Ford Focus which can offer up to 70mpg, with 100g/km of carbon dioxide emissions. This will then spread across the entire Ford portfolio to Land Rover, Jaguar and Volvo. The company has spent time developing alternative fuel technologies, now offering Focus and Mondeo in biofuel colours, as well as looking into clean diesel, hydrogen-fuelled combustion engines and fuel-cell hybrid vehicles. Recently Ford unveiled their ‘Edge’ concept, a plug-in hydrogen fuel-cell hybrid Edge concept and is currently developing a new prototype featuring the same technology installed in a lightweight aluminium body with excellent aerodynamics. Ford believes that a production plug-in hybrid could be ready for sale by 2015-2017. All of Ford’s manufacturing sites have been certified to the ISO 14001 environmental standard and take part in programs to conserve energy and water - Ford’s Bridgend plant is partly solar-powered. Ford claims that 85% of their models will be recyclable. In Germany they take back old models for environmental disposal, a policy which is now spreading throughout Europe. Ford also claims to be a leader in bio-ethanol, having sold 28,500 such models up to March 2007.

Honda has claimed that it is focusing on reducing all its cars carbon dioxide emissions and on becoming a more socially responsible company. They have launched three major electric hybrid vehicles, most recently the Civic IMA saloon cars, as well as initiatives to promote environmental awareness – for one month in 2006 all Hondas were included in a carbon-neutralising programme at no extra cost to buyers. Honda has a dedicated recycling research centre which explores new methods of vehicle disposal. Honda have in development a new diesel engine that offers high efficiency while at the same time reducing exhaust particulate emissions to petrol levels using a catalytic converter. Honda are also developing homogenous charge compression ignition engines in which, as in homogeneous charge spark ignition, the fuel and oxidizer are mixed together. However, rather than using an electric discharge to ignite a portion of the mixture, the concentration and temperature of the mixture are raised by compression until the entire mixture reacts simultaneously. Honda is also working to improve its VTEC engine system and the development of an ‘advanced VTEC’ which promises to improve fuel efficiency and performance.

At the Geneva motor show in 2007, Hyundai demonstrated the QarmaQ concept developed to demonstrate new materials which it believes will be prevalent in all new cars within the next 5 years. The body uses new plastic materials which save 60kg in weight compared to conventional materials. On the fuel side of things, the company has come up with fuel-cell Tucsons, and has also demonstrated an electric Santa Fe which it claims can recharge within only 30 minutes. Both Kia and Hyundai are aiming to offer a new diesel engine by 2010 which is claimed to cut emissions of oxides of nitrogen oxide by 90% which would make the diesel as clean as a petrol engine.

Nissan is launching new environmental initiatives across its model range. New petrol engines will, by 2010, emit no more carbon dioxide than comparable diesel engines. By that time they will also have launched a car that can offer 90mpg. The first Nissan hybrid – the Altima – was launched this year on a limited sales basis. A fuel-cell powered car will be launched in the early part of the next decade. Carbon dioxide has been included as an internal management performance indicator, meaning that emissions are an integral part of the measurement of the success of the business.

Peugeot offers a range of low carbon dioxide emitting cars. The new 107 offers 109g/km, whilst there are several 207s which emit 120g/km. The experimental 308 Hybride which has already been demonstrated by Peugeot should be in mass production by 2010. Peugeot has focused heavily on diesel-engine cars which have much lower carbon dioxide outputs than petrol engines, so to include an electric motor would raise the economy level of those vehicles considerably – we’d be talking about potentially 80-90 mpg for something like the 308 Hybride. This features a 110bhp HDi diesel, a six-speed automated gearbox and a 22bhp electric motor with fuel consumption at around 83mpg with carbon dioxide emissions measured at 90g/km. Peugeot is also focused on the proliferation of biodiesel and now has extended its warranty cover by saying that all of its cars can take 30% bio-fuel and 70% regular diesel. Peugeot is also considering compressed natural gas (CNG) for a model that will be launched in 2007, although this is intended for emerging markets rather than Western Europe. Peugeot has planted 2 million trees in Brazil to combat deforestation of the Amazon basin. It claims that 55,000 tonnes of carbon have been absorbed by the forest and that eventually this figure will rise to over 1 million tonnes.

| Renault states that it is "committed to sustainable development, reflected in practical initiatives to protect the environment." It aims to be among the top three car companies for low emissions of carbon dioxide, to offer a range of cars powered by biofuels such as bio-ethanol and bio-diesel. It also aims to develop a wide range of technology including electric cars that are affordable for its customers. Renaults are 95% recyclable by weight. Renault claims to have in place plans that will see 1 million of its models sold producing 140g/km or less, a third of which will be 120g/km and under. They also list as an aim the target that by 2009 50% of all Renaults available for sale will be capable of running an 85% ethanol mix in their petrol and diesel models.
Above and beyond the car side of things, Renault can boast that 90% of its factories have achieved ISO14001 certification which encourages environmental best practice. The company has five policies governing its environmental credentials: - Maintain the heritage in whatever site Renault is present.
- Analyse and eliminate the environmental impact of its activities.
- Product and service offerings should be reconciled with the need for environmental protection by including this consideration throughout the product lifecycle.
- Environmental monitoring should be implemented in such a way that external monitoring is possible through the life of the product.
- Provide transparent environmental reporting processes.
In 2006 Renault won the Environmental Management for Sustainable Development prize, awarded by the French Department of the Environment. The company was cited for the deployment of its environmental management across its foreign factories with the express aim of reducing the environmental impact of car manufacture across every stage of the process. Renault also aims to have, by 2010, an electric car that produces zero emissions when it is in motion. This will be available initially to large fleets in France and apparently the project is already at an advanced stage. Renault is collaborating with Nissan on the development of an advanced lithium-ion battery that will offer a greater range as well as an electric motor and control systems.
Renault launched a biofuel Megane at the end of 2007 – the Megane E85, featuring a 1.6 105bhp engine. Renault will launch a new range of models that meet certain environmental criteria with ‘eco2’ versions of their cars that produce less than 140g/km of carbon dioxide – these cars are also 95% recyclable, and at least 5% of their plastics are from recycled sources, and they have all been manufactured in a plant that meets ISO 14001 environmental standards. |
